Seasonal Decay: Keeping Rankings Fresh
At the end of each sport's season, we automatically reduce all player pageview counts by 75%. This ensures that retired, injured, or traded players don't remain artificially popular heading into the next season. The decay gives returning stars a head start based on prior interest while letting breakout rookies and new acquisitions climb the rankings quickly based on current research activity.
Why 75%?
A full reset would erase all signal. Keeping 25% of prior pageviews rewards players with sustained interest while still heavily favoring current-season activity. It's the sweet spot between memory and freshness.
When Does It Happen?
NBA & NHL: August 1st · NFL: March 1st · MLB: November 1st — timed to each sport's offseason so rankings are fresh when the new season begins.
