MLB Batting Splits 2019

Performance splits by handedness, home/away, and situational categories.

Batting splits break down a hitter's performance across different game situations. Platoon splits (vs LHP/RHP) are the most predictive for DFS and prop betting. Minimum 10 at-bats displayed.

Understanding Position Splits

Position splits show how a hitter performs when playing different fielding positions. Utility players and multi-position athletes may hit differently depending on where they're playing — the defensive workload and mental focus of different positions can affect offensive output.

DH vs Fielding

The DH spot removes defensive responsibilities, letting hitters focus entirely on offense. Some players see OPS boosts of 50-100 points as DH, while others perform similarly regardless. Check DH splits for players who rotate between DH and the field.

Primary vs Secondary Position

Players often hit better at their primary position where they're most comfortable. A shortstop forced to play third base, or an outfielder moved to first, may see subtle changes in offensive output. The defensive distraction of an unfamiliar position can bleed into at-bats.

Fantasy & DFS Eligibility

Position splits help assess multi-eligible DFS players. A player listed as OF/1B may produce very differently depending on which spot they play. Check lineup cards for the actual position — a hitter starting at DH vs playing the field can mean meaningfully different expected output.

Data Source & Methodology

Batting splits sourced from MLB Stats API. Stats reflect current season data and update daily as games are played.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do hitters perform better at DH?
It varies by player. Some hitters, especially older veterans and injury-prone players, see significant OPS boosts when DHing because they can focus entirely on hitting. Others actually perform worse without the rhythm of fielding between at-bats. Check individual DH splits rather than assuming a universal benefit.
How do position splits affect DFS lineup building?
Position splits help you evaluate multi-position eligible players. If a player is listed at 1B/OF in DFS but plays DH today, his position splits can tell you whether that's a boost or neutral. Also useful for utility players who bounce between positions — some have clear best positions offensively.
Why would a player hit differently at different positions?
Defensive workload affects energy and focus. Demanding positions like catcher and shortstop require more mental and physical effort, potentially reducing offensive focus. The DH role eliminates this entirely. Playing an unfamiliar position can also cause anxiety that bleeds into at-bats.
