Waiver Wire Emergency: Yankees pick up Zoilo Almonte, HRs currently 3-3

If you are upset for missing out on Yasiel Puig or you didn’t anticipate Tampa prospect Wil Meyers now is your time to take a chance on the newly called up outfielder for the New York Yankees, Zoilo Almonte. At this moment he just hit a home run and is 3/3 for what has been a horrid hitting Yankees team in June. This shakeup will be appreciated by Yankees fans. Knee jerk reaction? Possibly, but given the hype of all these other phenoms and the extent of the Yankees injuries this could be a huge play!

Vernon Wells will likely get the preference left handed pitching at bats, but if this switch hitter gets hot then Girardi will need to go out of his way to keep him in the lineup. Jason Nix in the second spot certainly isn’t ideal at this point and Granderson will need time to transition after such a long layoff. By the time September rolls around Almonte may be the consistent outfielder in an always competitive Yankees lineup.

I’m skeptical. Where did this dude come from? He wasn’t listed on any pre-season website as a top prospect. He wasn’t even listed in any top-10 Yankees prospect list.
