Think you know who the most targeted WR in the NFL is through the first 5 weeks of 2013 fantasy football? You may be surprised! One of the more overlooked aspects of fantasy football (and in PPR leagues) is the targets per game. Now, obviously this doesn’t tell us the whole story, but it does suggest who QB’s are looking for when in a pinch, and which players should continue to thrive if the environment stays the same.
Another angle to consider are the NFL sports betting lines. Which games are expected to be high scoring affairs? (47+ points) and which are expected to be dominated by defense? (Under 42 points). When choosing between two WR’s you want to pick the juiciest high scoring matchup, lack of a shutdown corner, and a highly targeted receiver.

Cecil Shorts – Jacksonville Jaguars
That’s right folks, Shorts is your most targeted WR through the first 5 weeks. So why hasn’t he broken out? Well, because for 3 of those weeks it was Blaine Gabbert targeting him, which doesn’t bode well for any receiver. Also, now that Justin Blackmon is back, you can expect Shorts targets per game to drop a touch, but with Henne under center, and opposing defenses paying attention to Blackmon, Shorts reception % may actually go higher than 50%!
Who is due for a bump up in targets per game?
Tony Gonzalez – Atlanta Falcons
Julio is out for the season, Roddy is still limping around the locker room. Who do you think will be Matt Ryan’s go to guy? T-Gone should remain a top 5 option for the remainder of the season at TE, and be highly coveted in PPR leagues.
Who is due to lose a few targets per game?
Julian Edelman – New England Patriots
This one is obvious. Hopefully most owners realize with the healthy return of Gronk and Amendola, Edelman should drop down to about 6-7 targets per game. Still useful, but not a great option in PPR leagues due to his lack of TD’s
