Week 4 - In nearly every defensive metric this season, the 49ers are simply average. They have given up 65 points on defense, just under 22 pts per game, and they have 2 INT’s and 2 fum recoveries. No DEF TD, no special teams TD’s, and just 14 fantasy points total. Many teams are AVERAGING over 14 fantasy points per week (Arizona, Chicago). Why anyone ever drafts a defense in the 9th or 10th round is beyond me, and now we keep seeing the 49ers ranked as the leagues top fantasy defense on other sites that post their own projections. The fact of the matter is the 49ers are an average fantasy defense at this point in the season, and in week 4 they face a New York Jets team that doesn’t turn the ball over very often. We do not recommend the 49ers defense in this matchup as it is very unlikely that they will score a defensive TD or return a kick for a TD in this game.
Week 2 – Are you one of those fantasy owners that reached for the 49ers a few rounds to early and want to know what went wrong? Well you played the Green Bay Packers in week 1, for one thing. And we have bad news, it isn’t about to get any better as the 49ers will be facing the equally potent Lions offense in week 2. Odds are the 49ers will be in the bottom 15 in fantasy defense scoring once again for the second week of fantasy football 2012.
The 49ers enter the 2012 fantasy football season as our top ranked defense. It is no secret they have one of the top lockdown defenses in the league, but we also project them to have more fumble recoveries than any other team in football. If you want to pick the best defense in football, don’t move too early as the 49ers are only projected to put up 50 points more than the 10th ranked defense. Our recommendation would be round 11 at the earliest, and a more likely target round of 13 or 14.
