The mock drafts are starting to heat up, and in my continuing quest to find the actual values of players this preseason, I went ahead and completed another auction over at ESPN. This was a 12-team ESPN mock auction, and once again the suggested values played heavily on the prices for each player. ESPN auction prices tend to be more conservative than Yahoo’s, but with a starting bankroll of $260 there is still plenty of money to throw around.
As you would expect there were the some names guys fell in love with, and a bidding war ensued (like Stephen Strasburg – $50) but those are situations that most fantasy sites don’t take into account. You get the suggested values on the other sites, but you don’t get to see the fluctuations that occur in real live drafts. Turns out the best value in this draft was Ryan Braun, the first player put up for bid, as he went for just $38!

Man, I get the love for Stras, but come on…I wonder if the discount the owner picked Braun up for had anything to do with everyone else and their worry for a suspension during the year. I know it’s only a mock draft, but I would’ve probably treated it like an actual draft and had a little worry about his situation in the back of my head.

Just from being there when it happened… Stras was put up about 20th in the mock ,and it turned into an immediate three way bidding war with no one backing down. That does happen quite often in auctions, but rarely for pitchers

Yea that’s what I don’t get. I’ve seen it the past few years with hitters like Miggy and Braun, but never like this for a pitcher. I think the most a pitcher has ever garnered in our 13 team ESPN league was $40 a couple years ago for Roy Halladay.

I find every auction is different, so even though the Strasburg thing got a little out of control, I think it definitely highlights how a few bidders can run the price up on a guy you might not be expecting.
