Best and worst matchups for week 4 fantasy football 2013 Quarterbacks (QB)

/ If you are looking for our week 4 rankings, those are available through the links in the menu bar above /

When it comes to fantasy football, owners simply know who the best and worst matchups are for their QB week to week, right?  Your quarterback is playing against the Patriots or Saints, and they are sure to net you 20+ points, while playing a stingier defense like the Ravens you are just hoping for a pass TD or two?  Well, as Barney Stinson would say, prepare to be AMAZED

Best Matchups for quarterbacks – week 4

Fantasy PPG Allowed – QB Team Opposing QB – week 4
28.97 San Diego Chargers Tony Romo
27.34 Washington Redskins Terrelle Pryor (concussion)
23.02 Arizona Cardinals Mike Glennon
22.43 Green Bay Packers BYE
21.91 New York Giants Alex Smith
21.67 Dallas Cowboys Philip Rivers
21.41 Oakland Raiders Robert Griffin III
21.4 Jacksonville Jaguars Andrew Luck
21.18 Philadelphia Eagles Peyton Manning
20.69 Baltimore Ravens E.J. Manuel

As you would expect, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck and Tony Romo are must starts.  Running QB’s Robert Griffin and Terrelle Pryor are both fringe options (Griffin because of poor play, Pryor because of concussion), while sleepers Alex Smith, Philip Rivers and E.J. Manuel may find their way into fantasy owners lineups (especially those owners that have Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton on bye weeks.

No real surprises on the list, as many of the teams listed were expected to have below average pass defenses this year.

Worst Matchups for QB’s – week 4

Fantasy PPG Allowed – QB Team Opposing QB – week 4
8.16 Seattle Seahawks Matt Schaub
9.47 New England Patriots Matt Ryan
9.81 New Orleans Saints Ryan Tannehill
10.37 Detroit Lions Jay Cutler
10.99 Pittsburgh Steelers Christian Ponder
11.15 Carolina Panthers BYE
11.35 Kansas City Chiefs Eli Manning
12.67 Tennessee Titans Geno Smith
12.91 Indianapolis Colts Blaine Gabbert
13.77 New York Jets Jake Locker

As expected, the Seahawks absolutely dominate opposing QB’s, holding them to under 10 fantasy PPG on average, but how about the teams ranked 2nd and 3rd on this list?  The Patriots and Saints, two teams that normally give up a ton of yards through the air, have both held their opponents QB under 10 FPPG.  Will that continue all season?  Obviously not, but it still could be a tougher matchup than anticipated for Matty Ice and Ryan Tannehill.

Owners that were wondering about starting Ponder, Smith, or Locker look like they are in for tough weeks (No one is considering Blaine Gabbert right?).  These QB’s are sketchy to being with, and facing solid opposing secondaries, they should be left on fantasy benches/waiver wires.

In summary

Yes, it is a small sample size.  Yes there are a variety of factors that go into these numbers, including game pace/ situation, opponent, weather and what not.  The fact remains, that when you have a short season like the NFL does (16 games) you have to start noticing the trends early on.  Matt Ryan will still be a top 10 start this week, even while facing a stout New England secondary, but as the season progresses these numbers will have more and more meaning.

I have Rodgers on a bye week. Debating between Alex Smith and Big Ben. What do you think? Both are available on waivers. Had Terrell as backup but with that concussion he’ a risky hold/play

Should I play Edelman or Reggie Wayne this week? I have a feeling that Edelman may have a repeat of week one this week against the Falcons… Or is Tom Brady going to dump it off to his young talent?

Gronk is back, and The young guys are doing great i see edelman having a week like last week. Week 5 brings amendola back making edelmans value limited. Just my opinion

Should I play Matt Ryan or Philip Rivers. I know Patriots have a strong D and the cowboys give up alot on passing.
